Leather care is very important for keeping your boots looking as good as new all the time. Leather is a great material for making shoes and boots because of its style, durability and comfort. Durability is one of the major perks, but that comes at a cost. Leather is from animal hides (usually cattle) and to make sure leather doesn’t deteriorate, it needs more maintenance than materials like fabric or rubber. We recommend the following care regime of cleaning, conditioning, polishing and protecting.
Cleaning leather shoes and boots
Basic cleaning can be done by taking a clean rag or cloth, dampening it with water, and wiping off grit and grime. It takes less than 5 minutes. You can repeat as often as needed, which is especially convenient for shoes you wear every day. The leather of a shoe is delicate. There is no need for leather polish which cover up the creases, but for creams which nourish the leather and slow the process of ageing. The best shoe cleaner products are of a creamy consistency because cream more easily penetrates the leather.
Conditioning leather shoes and boots
Next step of leather care is conditioning your shoes. It`s just as important as conditioning everything else. Leather conditioner moisturizes the leather, makes it softer and prevents cracking. The leather will absorb the conditioner, so all you need to do is spread it onto your shoes until every part is covered. After you finish, clean any conditioner remaining on the shoes.
Polishing and protecting leather shoes and boots
Apply a thin leayer of neutral or color-matched shoe polish such as wax polish. Use horsehair brush or soft cloth in a circular motion. Allow to air dry. Buff using a clean cloth or paper towel. For extra shine, repeat. If you want to take an extra step to protect your shoes, waterproofing is a great way to keep them shielded and looking good. No matter which polish or waterproofing method you prefer, proper leather care of your shoes or boots will keep them durable and looking as good as new.
